World of American Universities
Let’s look at an example of a college and a university, by exploring maps of the campus, the school’s land and buildings.
Of course, you will usually find a library, classrooms, offices, cafeteria, student housing, computer labs, sports fields, and other outdoor space. Sometimes there is also a church on a college campus.
If possible, it is very helpful to visit a college campus for a tour before you apply or accept admission, to be sure that it is a good choice for you.
The image below is a view of Wellesley College, a 4-year college for women. This is a small campus.
The image below is a view of Harvard University. The campus is very large, and includes graduate schools like Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, and Harvard Business School. Undergraduates receive degrees from Harvard College. All together, these schools and the college are known as Harvard University.

This is the first of three modules in the Pathway to a Top University course. This module contains six units that will guide you through different aspects of the U.S. higher education system. You’ll demonstrate what you’ve learned by completing short research assignments in order to create profiles for six universities. The University Profiles Project (UPP) is the final project for this module.
